Dies ist die wahre Geschichte des Eistauchers
Die Idee zum Namen "Eistaucher" hatte ich schon vor mehreren Jahrzehnten und immer das Bild einer Robbe unter dem Eis vor Augen. Erst 2025 habe ich erfahren, daß es eine Vogel-Spezies gibt, die Eistaucher genannt wird. Mit der hat dieser Bericht nichts zu tun.
Der Eistaucher
Der Eistaucher ist ein Robbe, die unter dem Eis schwimmt. Umgeben von Eis. Überall Eis. Sie ist unter der Eisdecke und muß hier unten ihr Essen suchen. Und sie muß zurück zu dem Loch im Eis (oder einem anderen, falls sie eines findet), an dem sie wieder auftauchen und frische Luft atmen kann.
Sie muß mit ihrer Kraft und ihrer Luft haushalten. Sie muß so wenig Energie und so wenig Luft verbrauchen wie nur möglich. Verbraucht sie zuviel und kann nicht zurück, wird sie sterben. Eine zweite Chance gibt es nicht.
Das ist der Eistaucher.
Ich bin der Eistaucher.
Dies ist meine Geschichte.
Ich habe sie erlebt.
Es ist kein Roman. Sie ist wahr.

This is the true story of the Icediver
I'd had the idea for the name 'Icediver' for several decades, and I'd always pictured a seal beneath the ice. It wasn't until 2025 that I learnt there is a species of bird called the Eistaucher ("loon"). This account has nothing to do with that.
The Icediver
The Icediver is a seal that swims beneath the ice. Surrounded by ice. Ice everywhere. It is beneath the ice sheet and must search for its food down here. And it must return to the hole in the ice (or another one, if it can find one), where it can resurface and breathe fresh air.
It must conserve its strength and its air. It must use as little energy and as little air as possible. If it uses too much and cannot get back, it will die. There is no second chance.
That is the Icediver.
